Original Comic Art – Top 10 Lots Sold on eBay in April 2019

Published on 3 Maggio 2019 by Comicart.tips On Original Comic Art Articles and reports

Here’s a top ten list of Original Comic Art sold on eBay USA in April 2019. The list is based on higher ending price, but this time I’m doing two lists: one for auctioned comic art and one for Buy it Now items (some of the pricier items were sold with a Best Offer and I don’t want to make a list with uncertain prices). So basically this is more a top 20..!

If you want to know about pieces like these when they go for sale, subscribe to the (free) Original Comic Art Tips newsletter by going to the home page. Each week I look at all the original comic art auctions (eBay, Heritage, ComicLink and other auction houses) and highlight the best items (no scrolling through fanart, fake production pieces, etc.).

bob-layton-avengers-original-art

1 – Bob Layton/Joe Rubinstein, What If? #32 Original Comic Art (click here to see the original listing), $15,300.

Great cover art, detailed inking and with a lot of display value. High quality pieces like this one are rare to find on eBay. This is almost a record for Bob Layton penciled original art, an Iron-Man cover was sold for $19k in last February’s Heritage Auction. Prices for Layton’s art in the last year have taken a good leap forward.

dan-adkins-incredible-hulk-original-art

2- Dan Adkins, Incredible Hulk #232 Original Comic Art (click here to see the original listing), $13,500.

Another Marvel cover, The Incredible Hulk and Captain America in action from a beloved run. An high end piece that may probably go for more on a specialized auction. Adkins worked mainly as an inker, pieces where he provided complete art are highly desirable.

from-hell-original-comic-art

3 – Eddie Campbell, From Hell ch. 5 pp. 12/13 (click here to see the original listing), $6,300.

Well, this is a 2 page lot, we should consider half that price for each page, but with $3,150 each page would still be in this top ten. Pages from the Alan Moore/Eddie Campbell graphic novel rarely come for sale, and as a perennial bestseller there are always new fans searching for original art.

Alex-Ross-marvels-original-art

4 – Alex Ross, Marvels Original Comic Art (click here to see the original listing), $4,250.

This is by far not the best page from the Marvels prestige series. Several superheroes appear but only in photos. It’s a quiet scene but related to the general theme of the plot: superheroes viewed by regular people (a photographer). Considering that a fight scene would cost more than two times this price, this page is a nice compromise for a fan of this modern classic.

dale-keown-incredible-hulk-comic-art

5 – Dale Keown, Incredible Hulk Original Comic Art (click here to see the original listing), $3,750.

A 2/3 splash page drawn by a superstar of the 90’s. It’s a quiet page but it is still a big shot of the character that made Keown a star.

Alex-Ross-kingdom-come-original-art

6 – Alex Ross, Kingdom Come #3 Original Comic art (click here to see the original listing), $3,500.

Alex Ross for the second time, with his second modern classic. Again this is not the best Kingdom Come page, but the best ones would cost between $10k to $20k. It’s rare to find painted Original Art by Ross on eBay, having two in the same month is a rare occurrence.

fantastic-four-original-cover-art

7 – Paul Ryan, Fantastic Four #356 Original Cover Art (click here to see the original listing), $3,350.

According to Wikipedia, this is the first of the 50+ issues of Fantastic Four drawn by Ryan in his well regarded early 90’s run. FF covers by Ryan are rare to come by, in the last few years I’ve only seen a handful on auction.

romita-jr-daredevil-original-art

8 – John Romita, Jr., Daredevil #256 Original Comic Art (click here to see the original listing), $3,250.

Prices for Daredevil art by Romita Jr. are growing year by year, and pages with Typhoid Mary are very popular among fans.

don-heck-avengers-original-comic-art

9 – Don Heck/Dave Cockrum, Avengers #108 Original Comic Art (click here to see the original listing), $2,275.

A classic, full-team Avengers page from 1973, drawn by Heck and Cockrum… nothing more to say!

swamp-thing-original-comic-art

10 – Steven Bissette, Swamp Thing #5o original Comic Art (click here to see the original listing), $2,000.

Another classic run. Fans of Alan Moore fight over every piece of original art from his comics, a page with Swamp Thing was sold last January on ebay for $1,600.

These 10 pages are divided between the Big 2 exactly like in February: 7 from Marvel Comics, 2 from DC Comics. The tenth, From Hell, is now published by Top Shelf. 3 are covers (all Marvel covers), the other 7 are interior pages. For the second time in a row, all pages in this list were drawn before the year 2000, Kingdom Come (1996) is the most recent, and it’s already considered a classic.
