Original Comic Art – Top 10 Lots Sold on eBay in May 2019

Published on 6 Giugno 2019 by Comicart.tips On Original Comic Art Articles and reports

Here’s a top ten list of Original Comic Art sold on eBay USA in May 2019. The list is based on higher ending price, and there are 2 lists: one for auctioned pieces and one for buy it now/best offer.

If you want to know about pieces like these when they go for sale, subscribe to the (free) Original Comic Art Tips newsletter by going to the home page. Each week I look at all the original comic art auctions (eBay, Heritage, ComicLink and other auction houses) and highlight the best items (no scrolling through fanart, fake production pieces, etc.).

iron-man-original-comic-art

1 – Whilce Portacio, Iron-Man vol. 2 #4 Original Cover Art (click here to see the original listing), $6,000.

Heroes Reborn was a big deal in the mid-90’s, Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld (with artists from theis studios) briefly returned to Marvel Comics to revamp some of their classic characters in a decade dominated by mutants. Nowadays it’s almost impossible to find a Marvel cover from the 90’s for under $3,000, the price seems right.

dale-keown-original-art

2 – Dale Keown, Pitt #1 Original Comic Art (click here to see the original listing), $3,952.

Owning original art by Dale Keown is a dream for many collectors. His runs on the Incredible Hulk and on The Pitt, his own creation at Image, are on top of the wishlist. Pitt probably represents the peak of his ultra-rendered style, and prices are going up following the quick rise of his Incredible Hulk art. Just one year ago you could buy this splash on ComicLink for $2,600 and going back 5 years you could buy an incredible DPS on Heritage for $3,800.

Mike-Mignola-original-comic-art

3 – Mike Mignola, Monsters Unleashed #1 Original Cover Art (click here to see the original listing), $3,500.

Anything drawn by Mike Mignola now demands big money, modern (non Hellboy) covers like this one used to cost $2,000/2,500 just a couple years ago. Prices will probably go up even more in the next few years, so if you can afford Mignola original art at current prices you better buy it.

gary-frank-original-art

4 – Gary Frank, Doomsday Clock #7, p. 9 Original Comic Art (click here to see the original listing), $2,854.

The same eBay user has been selling Gary Frank original art from this series for several months now, with pages often reaching 4 figure prices. For what I can see from this tiny image this seems a fight page with many characters, so the price is on the higher end.

Sal-Buscema-original-comic-art

5 – Sal Buscema, Avengers #78, p. 6 Original Comic Art (click here to see the original listing), $2,854.

There was a time a few years ago when Sal Buscema original art was still very cheap compared to other classic Silver/Bronze Age artists… This doesn’t look like a very exciting page (I haven’t read the issue it may be from a collected storyline), but still it’s from a very early Avengers issue.

Neal-Adams-original-comic-art

6 – Neal Adams/Nick Cardy, Teen Titans #22, p. 10 Original Comic Art (click here to see the original listing), $2,261.

Another page that is rare to find on eBay, but this seller has been auctioning a collection of high quality vintage DC art for some months, now. From a story written and penciled by Neal Adams and inked by great Teen Titans artist Nick Cardy, 2 giants on the same page.

will-eisner-spirit-original-art

7 – Will Eisner, The Spirit, Jan 1947 Original Comic Art (click here to see the original listing), $2,135.

The last page of the story with The Spirit and Dolan barely appearing in a couple panels. Not the best piece for a Spirit fan, but still historic and with a much lower price tag than better pages.

michael-golden-original-art

8 – Michael Golden, Marvel Fanfare #2, p.4 Original Comic Art (click here to see the original listing), $2,032.

Classic Mike Golden art from the early 80’s is heavily collected, this page was published in 1982, when Golden was also working on Dr. Strange in one of his most famous runs.

bruce-timm-original-art

9 – Bruce Timm, Zatanna published pinup Original Comic Art (click here to see the original listing), $2,000.

Timm very rarely does colour commissions anymore. His many fans run at every opportunity to buy even a small sketch, this published piece was an easy sell.

john-byrne-original-comic-art

10 – John Byrne, Fantastic Four #210, p.7 Original Comic Art (click here to see the original listing), $1,999.

Great page inked by Joe Sinnott with the full team in space. The price seems really good compared to other FF pages seen for sale recently, this makes me think I could afford one! ?

Last month the list was Marvel-centric and all the art was drawn in the last millennium. This time Marvel is still winning over DC 5-3 (last month was 7-2), then there’s an Image page and a Syndicated strip. 3 pieces were drawn post-2000 (with one from 2019). 2 covers, 1 commission and 7 interior pages.
