Original Comic Art Sold on eBay – Summer 2019 Top Ten

Here we are with a new report for Original Comic Art sold on eBay. This post takes into consideration art sold between June and September 2019, and the chart is based on the highest price paid.

As usual, the top ten is only for pieces on auction, go to the end for another top ten of comic art sold with Buy It Now/Best Offer.

1) Jack Kirby: The Mighty Thor #161 Original Comic Art – $7,300.

As it often happens Jack Kirby comes first, with a solid Thor page. An action panel, 2 Thor portraits and a full Mjolnir panel. It’s not rare to find nice Kirby pages on eBay, auction houses lately put for sale 20+ Kirby originals in every auction, with the risk for mid-price pieces to get lost.

2) Curt Swan – Action Comics #520 Title Splash Original Comic Art – $7,250

An appealing full figure pinup of Superman drawn by fan-favorite Swan. That being said it’s a pretty high price, it’s not hard to find Superman covers for less than $10k, not considering that a (better?) splash was sold for half the price less than a year ago.

After the publication of this post the page was put for sale again for the same price.

3) Dave Cockrum: Uncanny X-Men #155 Original Comic Art – $6,400

A quiet page from Cockrum’s second run as artist on the X-Men title, a great Wolverine image and a full team panel, with a much lower price than original art from the first run.

4) Alex Raymond: 1946 Rip Kirby Daily Original Comic Art – $6,300

5) Jack Ricard – MAD #141 Original Cover Art – $6,300

6) Kelley Jones & George Pratt – Sandman #26 Original Comic Art – $5,550

Early Sandman art from Kelley Jones, one of the best artists to work on Neil Gaiman’s Vertigo series. Sandman is already considered a classic, and prices reflect this status.

7)  Ed Benes: Justice League of America #1 Original Cover Art – $5,500

Every DC superhero in this wraparound cover to (another?) first issue of JLA. A prefect display piece drawn by Benes, a fan-favorite of the last decade.

8) Kevin Eastman: TMNT #95 Original Cover Art – $5,250

I only see three Ninja Turtles in this busy Eastman cover, this wasn’t a problem to the many bidders who took this piece to more than $5k. TMNT are always popular, with comics published by IDW and new art by their co-creator always in big demand.

9) Jack Kirby: Captain America #108 Original Comic Art – $5,000

The second Kirby page of this top-ten. Not much to add. Sometimes high-end original art comes to ebay.

10) Budd Root: Cavewoman Original Painted Illustration – $3,900

Budd Root has a big cult following, with fans buying variant covers, prints and original art. The price is not bad, considering this is a big, detailed color piece.

2) Michael Turner: Superman/Batman #11 Original DPS Comic Art – $7,730;

3) Mark Schultz: Xenozoic Tales Original Cover Art – $6,500;

4) Alex Ross: Shazam Power Of Hope Original Painted DPS – $5,500 (Best Offer);

5) Rick Hoberg: What If? #10 Original Comic Art (1st Jane Foster as Thor) – $5,000 (Best Offer);

6) Basil Wolverton: Original Illustration Art – $4,500;

7) Amanda Conner: Harley Quinn #9 Original Cover Art – $4,500;

8) Sam Kieth: Batman Scratch #5 Original Comic Art – $3,500 (Best Offer);

9) Jack Kirby: Captain America #200 Original Comic Art – $3,300 (Best Offer);

10) Sal Buscema: Avengers #89 Original Comic Art – $3,000.

The auctions top ten is a bit different than usual, with less superheroes (5/10) and less pages from Marvel/DC.

Marvel is represented by 3 pieces and wins with #1 and #3. DC has four pieces (if you consider the MAD cover and the Vertigo page), 2 are from independent publishers and one comic strip.

The Buy It Now top ten is more superhero-centric with 7/10 pieces, #1 is an exceptional and rare piece by Robert Crumb, #6 is an illustration by the highly collectable Basil Wolverton and #3 is a Xenozoic Tales illustration by Mark Schultz, Original art by Schultz never goes unsold (and is one of the most clicked on the Newsletter).
