Original Comic Art Sold on eBay – Autumn 2019 Top Ten

Finally this is the new report for Original Comic Art sold on eBay in Autumn 2019 (September 21 – December 21). I’m a little late in posting this, a baby and some busy months at work mean that after doing the weekly newsletter I get little time to write blog posts…

As usual the chart is only based on the highest price paid, no considerations on quality/rarity/demand.

1) Gene Colan: Howard the Duck #11 Original Cover Art – $11,988

A high price for eBay standards, but for a classic and funny cover with high display value. The last two covers sold on Heritage (#6 and Annual #1) went for much higher prices, and I find this one better. Great inks by Steve Leialoha.

2) Charles Schulz: Peanuts Original 1989 Comic Strip – $9,800

This strip was sold two times in the same week, the first time it went for $10k, maybe the first buyer backed out. Either way it’s a very, very good price for an original Peanuts daily, this is also from the late 80’s, still a classic time for Peanuts strips, and it features baseball, one of the most requested recurring themes.

3) John Byrne: Avengers #166 Original Comic Art – $8,000

This Avengers original page by John Byrne went for a higher price than I expected, it’s a classic fight page with Thor and the Vision, but not particularly dynamic.

4) Joe Orlando: Daredevil #4 Original Comic Art – $7,700

It’s rare to find such historic original comic art on eBay, Orlando only drew a few pages for Marvel, but he managed to be a part of the early Marvel Universe. Apart from the historic value and the uninspired inks by Colletta, I find this page interesting because the pencils are still very visible and somebody (Stan Lee?) tried several times a lettering correction in the margins, that was then exactly redone by the letterer.

5) Jack Kirby: Journey Into Mystery #124 Original Comic Art – $5,600

It’s impossible to make an eBay (U.S.) top ten without a Kirby piece of original art, and with a nice Thor transformation scene. Margin notes written by Kirby, and the Stan Lee Signature is a good bonus too.

6) Bob Larkin: Iron-Man original Paperback Cover – $5,100

Not comic art and not for a comic book, but a painted cover for an Iron-Man paperback reprint. Larkin is well known by comics fans as an illustrator for many Marvel magazine covers.
A painting for a Fantastic Four TPB was sold on Heritage in 2011 for $3,1k, considering that 9 years passed since, this seems like a good deal for the new owner.

7) Alex Ross: Wizard Magazine Original Cover Art – $5,000

A Thundercats/Battle of the Planets cover for Wizard. Considering the prices for original superhero covers by Alex Ross this is not a bad price (if you’re a fan of the two cartoons).

8) Mike Grell: Warlord #25 Original Comic Art – $4,550

Many Warlord original pages by Grell were sold on eBay in the last year and all of them went for premium prices. Seems like this series still has many fans, and this splash is a really nice piece.

Consider also that this looks like a splash but it’s a vertical DPS, it must be impressive seen live.

9) Ed McGuinness: Batman/Superman #1 Original Variant Cover Art – $4,060

A DC cover from early in the career of Ed McGuinness. I think the price is a little too high considering that the two figures are mostly silhouettes.
For comparison, look at this DPS that was sold last November on Heritage for $3k. I know it’s not a cover, but I’d rather have the DPS on my wall.

10) Joe Orlando Daredevil #3 Original Comic Art – $3,938

Another very early Daredevil page. The same seller sold the two you can see in this chart and at least another one in 2019 (I posted it in an issue of the Comic Art Tips Newsletter a few months ago). It’s rare for key original Silver Age pages to show up on eBay, but whey they do prices skyrocket. I think the owner made a good choice by putting it on eBay, in another auction it would probably be overshadowed by the Kirby/Romita/Kane pieces.

11) Frank Springer: Star Wars Weekly #49 Original Comic Art – $3,729

Frank Springer original comic art rarely makes top tens. Classic Star Wars covers are rare and very hot collectibles, even outside of the comics/comic art collectors world. I think they will probably grow a lot more in 5/10 years.

Marvel wins with 7 entries out of 11, DC comes second with two. In the Summer top ten Marvel had 3 and DC 4 (you can read it here).
