Original Comic Art Sold on eBay – Winter 19-20 Top Ten

Winter ended a few days ago, so it’s time again for our report on the best original comic art sold on eBay during the last 3 months! As usual we have a top ten for auctioned pages and one for Buy It Now sales. The order of this chart is by highest price only.

Are you all fans of Rob Liefeld? If you follow ebay sales on the Original Comic Art Tips Newsletter (subscribe on the homepage of this website) we experienced a flood of original art by Liefeld since December, (here’s a link to original Liefeld art sold since January, I counted 29 pieces) most of the best pieces were sold by the same two accounts, but after seeing the very high prices for vintage Marvel art many collectors followed putting for sale their original art. So that said, let’s see the chart, with 6 out of 10 pieces drawn by the same artist!

1) Rob Liefeld – New Mutants #98 DPS Original Art – $19,300

We start this chart with a DPS from New Mutants #98, a classic from the early ‘90s with a classic ’90s style trick, the vertical DPS. Liefeld art (especially from New Mutants/X-Force) is growing steadily in price and this is basically a hand-drawn 22”-17” poster, perfect for display. tis represents a big jump up in price for an interior page without Cable and Deadpool.

2) George Herriman – Krazy Kat 1939 Daily Strip –  $12,000

Happy to see original art from a classic comic strip in a top ten dominated by superheroes.
Bidders probably were a little carried away by competition, but K.K. dailies are more rare to find than sundays (and much cheaper). The most recent comparable sale on Heritage is from February 2019, when a daily (with a less funny gag and only a glimpse on Offisa Pupp) was sold for $6,6k.

3) Rob Liefeld – X-Force #1 Original Comic Art – $8,000

After the first place Rob Liefeld original art takes also the bronze medal. This is not the most exciting/dynamic page of the issue, but it’s from X-Force #1, so that probably took the price up.

4) Bernie Wrightson – House Of Mystery #195 Original Comic Art – $7,300

An early job (1971) by Bernie Wrightson. This is page #8, the original art for page #9 was sold in 2017 on Heritage for $2,1k, while page #3 looks better to me and was sold less than a year ago (May, 19 2019) for $1,9k…

5) Rob Liefeld – New Mutants #93 Original Comic art – $6,800

New Mutants original art by Liefeld, this time in a splashy page featuring Stryfe.

6) Tyler Kirkham – Deadpool Back in Black #1 Variant original cover – $6,100

An exclusive to retailer KRS Comics, the Kirkham cover to issue #1 of Deadpool Back in Black, great cover full of details with two of the most in demand Marvel characters of the last few years. Nowadays $6k is more or less the entry price for original Marvel covers, until a few years ago it was possible to find covers by young artists for $1-2k, now things have quickly changed.

7) Rob Liefeld – Deadpool/Cable Annual Original Cover Art – $6,100

Nice modern cover with the two most famous Marvel characters created by Rob Liefeld. He produced many covers with these two characters in the last years, but demand for original art is always high.

9) Rob Liefeld – Cable #158 Original Cover Art – $4,600

After a Cable and Deadpool cover and a Cable splash, everybody was waiting to see a Cable cover. Here it is, I like the inking style on this one.
After the fact the buyer put the same piece for sale again for $17,5k, as if nobody had seen the auction on the same website just a few weeks earlier…

10) Howard Chaykin – American Flagg #22 Original Comic Art – $4,200

Chaykin original comic art from the 80’s is always in big demand, with pieces selling quickly and for good money. The cover to #27 of American Flagg was sold in August 2018 for $3,8k on Heritage, so this one remained in its price range.

7) Jim Lee – Justice League #5 Original Comic Art – $4,5;

8) Bill Sienkiewicz – Conan Calendar illustration Original Comic Art – $4,000 (Best Offer);

9) Paul Gulacy – Giant Size Master of Kung-Fu #2 Original Comic Art – $4,000;

10) Bill Everett – Tales to Astonish #96 Original Comic Art – $3,850.
