The Calvin & Hobbes Sunday strip by Watterson was sold for $480k, more than double the $216k made last September by a daily, but I’d expect a color Sunday to be worth more in comparison…

New Blog Post: Chris Samnee Batober prices/images!
I wrote the last post on the blog in June 2021, this newsletter is always updated, but the website was starting to get too much dust…
The opportunity of leaving a record of the Batober sketches by Chris Samnee was too good, so you can go and see a price chart and all 34 illustrations.
By the way, I have two other articles in the works, if time permits I plan to publish them in the next month.

Unexplainable results: a 2017 Snuffy Smith Sunday page was sold for $2k. If I had them I’d be happy to sell one for $200… Advertised as original art, there’s little doubt that this piece, sold for a $3,8k B.O. is just a print of a Gary Larson cartoon…
Remember last week’s fake Spidey sketch by Romita? It was sold for $1k, less than a comparable real sketch would sell for, but still a big sum. Remember it when it’ll resurface from a real seller…
Heritage Weekly Auction: the Black Spidey suit continues to win auctions, with this Frank Springer page sold for $8,4k. The Classic X-Men page went for $4,3k, the Man-Bat page by Golden for $4k, the Cyclops/Phoenix page by Ian Churchill for $2k, a color guide for a Fantastic Four cover by Byrne for $1,1k. A Daredevil page by Mazzucchelli for $5k, a 1955 Dick Tracy Christmas Sunday for $3k, a vintage sketchbook with top name sketches for only $700.
With classic original art prices going up to values impossible to reach for most collectors, color guides are quickly becoming prized collectibles. Prices are already starting to be unexplainable like it often happens for original art… Color guides for a Masterworks REPRINT of Amazing Spider-Man #1 were sold for $14k.

A full figure, 9.6 Venom sketch cover by Frank Miller went for $1,7k.
Green Berets dailies by Kubert go for $300 at Weiss Auctions, on eBay somebody paid $1,3k for one. $1k seems a lot for 17 pages of Lobo color guides. Our friendly neighborhood forger was lucky, this week, and sold a fake Nightcrawler sketch by Dave Cockrum for $600. At the moment of writing a fake Spidey sketch by John Romita has 100 watchers and 30 clueless bids with two hours to go. $1,8k for a nice Conan page by John Buscema, $2,5k for a Cyberfrog splash by VanSciver, $2,5k for a title page by Grandenetti/Wood, a sketched Kim Jung Gi book for $1k (BO).
Somebody paid $4k for a Sandman page prelim by Kristiansen, I wonder if they thought they were buying the published page.
Somebody is buying all of the (usually very cheap) Sonic pages available for high prices, this one for $1k.
After last week’s newsletter I received a lot of messages (thanks!) informing me that the Carlos Pacheco cover was probably a copy, as revealed by the original inker. Zooming in it’s not very clear, I don’t see pencil marks or whiteout, so it probably is a vintage copy that was sold for $2,7k. I hope the buyer is able to recognize an original piece from a copy with the paper in hand.
Heritage Weekly Auction: $23k for the Love & Rockets page by Jaime Hernandez, $9k for the Hulk page and $3k for the Captain America page by Sal Buscema, $6,6k for the Hulk page by Keown, $5,5k for the Spidey page by Byrne, $3,8k for a Crow cover by Alex Maleev.

Comiclink Auction: $10k for the Daredevil page by JRJR, $7,5k for the X-Men page by Andy Kubert, $6,5k for the Phoenix cover by J. Scott Campbell, $6,5k is not a bad deal on an X-Factor page by Simonson.
Last week I told you to keep an eye on the Bruce Timm pieces, the last Batman headsketches posted on Moy’s website had a $1,8k price tag, well this one instead went for $800, the Harley sketch for $750, instead of $1,250, while a full figure Batman went for $2,6k.
Exactly the opposite happens for Art Adams commissions, they were at $1,5k last week, this Magneto went for $2k and this Poison Ivy for $1,9k.
Some unexplainably high prices, like this Al Rio pinup sold for $2,5k, a Cyberforce page by David Finch for $2k, a Gen13 page by Gary Frank for $2k. I don’t want to believe these went high for the half naked superheroines… maybe second tier Image pages are growing?
Time for the thousand low priced pieces, the most interesting were a Hulk transformation page by Ron Wilson for $800, a DC Trinity pinup by Ivan Reis for $750, an Avengers DPS by Leinil Yu for $700, Y pages by Pia Guerra for $700 and $500, a DC cover by Riley Rossmo for $500, the Demon by Byrne for $500, Spidey by Simone Bianchi for $500.

A Wonder Woman splash by Nicola Scott, a Psylocke commission by Art Adams, some nice Batman/Batwoman pages by Ivan Reis, a rare 1991 sketch by Joe Mad.
Heritage Harlan Ellison Collection
I wasn’t expecting so much comic art in this auction, Harlan was a real collector, there are less covers and pages for Ellison written books and comics than classic DC/Marvel pieces. Maybe some pieces will go lower than market value for being buried inside a science fiction auction.
We start with three Watchmen pages, look at this one. Some very rare to find JLI pages and a cover by Kevin Maguire, look at this Swamp Thing page by Wrightson, a Doom Patrol cover by Byrne, a great Fantastic Four page by Kirby, three Wolverine pages by Frank Miller, a Dr. Strange cover by Sam Kieth, and really MANY more.

Welcome to #262 of Original Comic Art Tips!

Very high prices for Watchmen pages, this one went for $58k. $47k is the highest price paid for an Elektra page by Frank Miller, $45k for a page by Bilal, $30k for a cover by Jimenez, high prices for Batman pages by Risso, Super Mario Shikishi sketches went for $300 on Catawiki months ago, this one for $1,6k.
This triple cover inked by Oclair Albert over Ivan Reis is probably the record price for an inks over printed bluelines piece.
The catalogue was very deep, so there were also good deals to make: $47k is not a high price for this page by Jack Kirby starring both the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, $30k for a Deathbird splash and $19k for this Catwoman page, both by Jim Lee, “low” prices for Winsor McKay art: $68k for a Little Nemo page and $13k for a Rarebit Fiend page, a Blueberry page by Giraud for $12k, $10k is very good for a Crumb page, $9k for a Conan page by Barry Smith, $7k for a Marshal Law cover by O’Neil, a Hulk splash by Byrne for $5,5k, a full team Avengers page by Sal Buscema for $2,1k.
