A Cover Quality Thor Commission by Simonson!! – #308
Original Comic Art Tips #308 – August, 25 2023
Welcome! Many different auctions this week, we’re slowly preparing for the big autumn auctions.
Original Comic Art Auction Results
eBay: the pencil art for the digitally painted Astonishing X-Men #1 cover by J. Scott Campbell was sold for a $21k Best Offer. The final cover doesn’t look exactly as the art that was sold, so I guess it may be called preliminary art? A Mr. Freeze cover by Sean Murphy was sold for $15k but quickly put for sale again. A charity Rocketeer illustration by Daniel Warren Johnson was sold for $3,9k.
$2,5k (B.O.) for a Spidey page by Dan Spiegle, another page by Win Mortimer for $2,4k (B.O.), $2k (B.O.) for a Wolverine page by John Buscema, $1,6k (B.O.) for a Captain America page by Sal, $1,6k for a Black Cat page credited to Bob Powell, $1,4k for a Betty&Veronica pinup by Dan De Carlo, $1,2k for a very quick Batman sketch by Tim Sale.
Look: the Peanuts daily PRINT still managed to get to $4,8k, much less than the original would cost, but I hope the buyer will recognize it and send it back.
Heritage Weekly Auction: $7k for the Hellboy page by Mike Mignola, $6,5k for the Vampirella page by Wally Wood, $5k for the double MAD page by Aragones, $5k for a rare Sheldon Moldoff page, $4k for the Creepy page by Angelo Torres.
Some good deals on nice pages: $2,6k for the Avengers page by John Buscema, $1,7k for the Batman half splash by Giordano, $1,3k for an Invaders page by Frank Robbins, $900 for a Spidey page by Saviuk, $800 for a Batman page by Tom Lyle.
Catawiki: €1k for the Vendetta Macumba page by Magnus, €250 for the Manara panel, €350 for the Dany illustration.
ComicConnect Auction: I can’t access the total results, just the listings I have a direct link to, so I’ll wait another week to see if a complete list of results appears.

A Dennis the Menace panel by Hank Ketcham, a Conan cover by Lan Medina, an illustration by Gary Frank, a sketched TMNT HC, Mage by Matt Wagner, a Bloodshot cover by Sal Velluto, a great batch of Jeff MacNelly cartoons, this one is funny, but I’m tempted by the grandma.

This is one of the many Charity auctions usually held in person at cons, but this time they’re accepting email bids, so here I am…
There are a few published pieces, like this Green Lantern cover by Kevin Nowlan, a Hela cover by J. Scott Campbell, a funny Bloom County daily and two Parker pages by Darwin Cooke.
Then there are many cover quality illustrations drawn for the auction, I’ll link to some of my favorites: Thor by Simonson, Wolverine by Paul Smith, Aliens by Nelson, Hellboy by Bermejo, I like a lot this Star Wars piece by Sprouse, X-Men by Bradshaw and Captain America by Samnee.
Here’s a link to the complete listings.
Misc. Auctions
Comic Book Auctions: a Heros page by Frank Bellamy, a Dan Dare cover and two pages by Frank Hampson, two Blackhawk pages by Massimo Belardinelli.
M & M Gallery: they offer a page of sketches by Kim Jung Gi, no time to check if it’s the same sold a few months ago.
Aibo Art Auctions: some Eagles of Rome sketches by Enrico Marini: one, two, three.
Heritage Archie Auction: I’m not an expert on Archie Comics (never read any), so I’m linking to what I like and you should see all the lots yourself if you’re interested… Top price (for now) is for a Hostess Ad page and a Josie full story by Dan De Carlo, this Wilbur cover is very nice, this Harry Lucey cover is used as the catalog cover and should display well, a Little Archie cover by Bob Bolling, the first comics job by Neal Adams, and I like a lot Betty&Veronica pinups from the ’60s by De Carlo: one, two.
