I thought that the most interesting part of this newsletter would be the record prices at Comic Link, then I opened eBay… When was the last time you found John Byrne X-Men original art on eBay? 2005? Me too.
Since we’re talking about this, remember that if you decide to buy that page (or something completely different) on eBay and go there through one of the links in this newsletter, they’ll pay me a small commission (at no cost for you) and you’ll help keep this thing here going.
Heritage Weekly Auction: $5,7k for the X-Factor page by Walt SImonson, $4,5k for a Hulk page by Sal Buscema.
$8k for a Terry daily by Caniff, $5k for a Rusty Riley Sunday.
Remember a few years ago when I insisted that you should buy Spidey pages by Saviuk when they were selling on eBay for $700? Look at this half splash sold for $2,5k.
Transmetropolitan pages by Robertson are still hot, this one went for $1,9k.
I’m waiting to see what will happen when a top Batman page by Breyfogle will come to auction, after years with zero pages for sale, now some low/mid level pieces are coming out, this one was sold for $2k.
Catawiki: €650 for the cover by Corteggi, the unpublished Pazienzapage was a good deal at less than €500, a Disney cover by Andrea Freccero for €400, the Harley commission by Marini for €300.
Comiclink Featured Auction: I have a bad relationship with CL in 2023, for the second time in three months I saved the wrong ending date for an auction… and it was a great auction with many surprises in both high and low results. Well, at least I helped you save money.
The splash for Hulk #3 by Jack Kirby is one of the most valuable pieces ever offered by CL, and the $290k paid to take it home is the 4th ever price for Kirby art.
Christmas and horror are two of the main factors that grow auction prices, this $183k Vault of Horror cover by Johnny Craig makes a record for the artist. Very high jump for Rich Buckler with $83k paid for a Fantastic Four cover, a little bit of growth for Marshall Rogers, with $51k paid for a Dr. Strange cover, $36k for a Spidey page by McFarlane.
I think $26k is a record for Bissette, with a Swamp Thing DPS, $19k for a very rare Wildcats/X-Men page by Charest.
Many pieces went for less than expected. Look at Jim Lee art, an X-Men page went for $12k, another one (from the issue with Portacio finishes) for $4,7k, a Wildcats DPS for $10k, a top, full team Wildcats page for $9k, a full team JLA page for $3,6k, a published full figure Batman costume design for $1,6k and another JLA page for $1k.
Mandarake: only the wow! prices as usual. A Berserk sketch by Kentaro Miura was sold for $33k, same price for a Totoro sketch By Hayao Miyazaki, $7k for a Sailor Moon sketch by Naoko Takeuchi.
A Druuna pinup by Serpieri, a very nice 1988 sketch by Liberatore, a page by Battaglia, a sketch by Sergio Toppi, a very detailed sketch by Giardino.
A Disney page by Cavazzano, one by Valerio Held, one by G.B. Carpi.
