Issue #30
McFarlane, Mignola, Madureira, Tezuka, Manara and more in this week’s Original Comic Art Tips Newsletter!
A great week for Original Comic Art Auctions’ fans like us! many are ending next week, and many great pieces are now on eBay, I’ll have to cut a lot of links to keep this newsletter short…
Let’s start with results, on eBay, Katie Mignola raised $30.828 selling the 5 Hellboy endpapers drawn by her dad. A stunning sum if you think that Hellboy doesn’t appear in any of these pieces. The most detailed piece fetched $9,752 and this other $8,276. The other Winner of the week was Chris Samnee who sold 10 great Captain America pages for more than $13,000. The cover ended at £2,300, the splash at $1,750 and action pages around $1,600, while Nice pages like this one went for only $560.00. See the eBay section for 10 new Samnee pages! Looks like Buscema Avengers pages from the 80’s are growing, a few years ago you could find a page like this for less than $500. The Machine Man original art by Jack Kirby ended at $3,500.
Heritage Sunday: you can see how rare is Joe Madureira X-Men art by this quiet page who made almost $1,000. The Ron Lim Cosmic page went for something more, and the nice Irv Novick Batman page made $1,400. The Wizard of ID daily by Brant Parker made a Heritage record at $1,600 (even more than Sunday pages sold in the last 3 years) 2 collectors got carried away in a bidding war? The beautiful Cisco Kid by Salinas made the same amount and the Bloom County daily by Breathed $3,100.
This week on eBay
Norm Breyfogle – Batman Original Art
Lots of nice things, as I said, let’s see some of the Captain America pages Chris Samnee put for sale after last week’s great results: A great Action splash (already at 1.3k), a semi-splash, and Bucky telling his origin story. Another artist selling his work is Ethan Van Sciver with many Green Lantern pages ending really soon. This is a Cover still at $400. We have a new Cosmic page by Ron Lim every week lately, this week there’s an INCREDIBLE Infinity War page, another nice half-splash, an Infinity Finale Thanos vs. Hulk and a Thanos commission. Look at this Todd McFarlane original with the Hulk in every panel and this Uncanny X-Men page by Joe Mad that looks better than the one who just sold for 1k (‘nuff said). Incredible Hulk by Trimpe, the cover to Ultimate Spiderman #2 by David Marquez and some DC Comics: Green Arrow/Wonder Woman title splash by Dick Dillin, nice Batman splash by Don Newton and a detailed Batman Family Illustration by Norm Breyfogle. We end with a Grifter page by Travis Charest.
Heritage Sunday Auction
Mac Raboy – Flash Gordon Original Sunday Page
A very nice Tarzan/Jane vintage preliminary sketch by Neal Adams to start. A Jim Aparo page with Batman watching The Atom transform, a Curt Swan Superman page set in Krypton and some nice Black Cat Golden Age pages by Lee Elias (one here). An Orlando/Severin page from one of the best Weird Science stories, in my opinion, and a Mac Raboy Flash Gordon Sunday Original.
Christie's
Ana Miralles – Djinn Illustration
Christie’s once in a while prepares an auction of (mostly Franco/Belgian) Original Art. The first lots are gorgeous watercolors by Ana Miralles, then all of the greats: a page from Largo Winch Tome 1, many Bilal pieces, a XIII cover, 3 pieces by Hugo Pratt, a Tintin Cover with a Eur600,000 estimate, many Giraud/Moebius originals, a famous page by Manara and even a Kim Jung Gi huge illustration. I feel really poor!
Artcurial
Osamu Tezuka – Astroboy Original Art
As if it wasn’t enough, the day after Christie‘s there’s Artcurial’s auction, I can’t decide who’s got the highest quality catalog. I wasn’t expecting a museum piece like this: an original Astroboy page by Osamu Tezuka. It will probably return to Asia again soon… Then the perfect piece for an Asterix/Albert Uderzo fan. Some other Hugo Pratt Corto Maltese pieces, a Garage Hermetique title page by Moebius, many Manara originals, a beautiful Ranxerox page by Liberatore, and even a painted Spirit cover by Will Eisner.
Remember Cochran’s Auction ending tonight and see you next week!!
