Issue #24
Adams, Windsor-Smith, Schulz, Quesada, Tony Moore and many more in this very long 24 th. Issue of Original Comic Art Tips!
On Ebay the Frank Cho Bust(y) commission went for $700 and the John Cassaday X-Men/Alpha Flight Half Splash for almost $500.
Heritage Sunday: The last Batman page by Neal Adams ended at $2.700, a good price for a piece of this quality. A Walking Dead action page by Adlard at $250 is still pretty good and I’m happy to see that somebody can buy a nice Conan original by John Buscema for $350 (and $450 on ComicLink. If you wanted an older and better page you had to spend more than $1.000). On the other end of the spectrum a Byrne Drax pinup sold for $2.100, the Garcia Lopez/Kevin Nowlan page for $1.900 and the Jack Kirby/Wally Wood Sky Masters strip for $3.300.
ComicLink: The Original Art for Batman #618 cover by Jim Lee ended at $53,500. I can’t tell you if it’s a record for Lee art, but the most expensive piece sold on Heritage is this Wolverine #27 cover that went for $41.800 in 2012. Mike Ploog‘s Giant-Size Man-Thing #1 cover sold for $33.000 and the Romita Sr. Spiderman illustration for $28k. Jack Kirby’s cover to Black Panther #12 sold for $19.000, it was probably put into this auction to take some traction from the movie but the price remained in the range for this kind of art. The Spiderman #12 original by Todd McFarlane went for $12.000, the Spawn pages penciled by Greg Capullo, while rare, go for about a third or less.
Don’t forget the Little Nemo Auction ending next Saturday.
This week on eBay
Terry Dodson – White Queen Commission
A good start with a Ron Lim Infinity War action page, then a Marie Severin Original from Namor #16. A Captain America DPS by Howard Chaykin, a Silver Surfer page by Ron Frenz and a beautiful Terry Dodson White Queen commission. Another Gil Kane Superman page and a beautiful Joe the Barbarian page by Sean Murphy. A funny original by Will Eisner for $900, a Jim Mooney Spectacular Spiderman #31 page, a 1957 Pogo daily strip by Walt Kelly and we’re done for this week.
Heritage Sunday Auction
Barry Windsor-Smith – Rune Original Art
Now that we’re done with Batman, we can look at the Tower Records Star Trek comic credited to Neal Adams’ studio. A pro inker wrote on Facebook that this was inked by Sal Buscema with Adams re-drawing and inking Kirk‘s faces but I also see many little John Buscema faces… A second Ron Lim Infinity War Original and five pages by Barry Windsor-Smith, this Rune is the best. Look at this Herb Trimpe page: four panels, each one is showcasing the powers of a member of the Fantastic Four. A sexy Ghita illustration by Frank Thorne, a color Ghost pinup by Bruce Timm and a Casey Ruggles Sunday by Warren Tufts.
Hake's Auction #223
Charles Schulz – Peanuts Advertising Original Art
Hake’s amassed a big selection of pieces for this latest auction, between 450 lots we can find several good pieces. Some high-quality Terry and the Pirates strips by Milton Caniff, look at this one with Terry and the Dragon Lady. Then a lot of Peanuts advertising spot illustrations by Charles Schulz. If you’re searching for a nice display piece but you don’t want to go into 5 figures for a daily strip this is the way to go. The best piece is this one with many characters and signed. Then some smaller signed originals and some not signed like this small Charlie Brown. A Wayne Boring “how to draw Superman” illustration and three nice Marvel covers, Daredevil #111 by Ron Wilson, a great Punisher War Zone #11 by Mike Manley and Punisher #62 by Joe Quesada and Al Williamson.
Vermot et Associés
William Vance – XIII Original Art
Another nice French auction ending Saturday, this email is running too long so I’ll keep this short. Largo Winch by Franq. Many great Hermann originals like Comanche and Bernard Prince title pages. A Guarnido Blacksad Commission, Milo Manara and 3 XIII pages by Vance like this one.
Comiconnect Event Auction
Tony Moore – The Walking Dead Original Art
It’s time for another Comiconnect Auction with the third part of the Walking Dead sale. Some early pages by Tony Moore like this famous one from #2 and many by Adlard, a double page from #14, the splash from #119 (ink only, search also for the separated pencils) and a Zombie Splash from #59. Marvel: Spiderman Vs. Venom interior by Todd McFarlane, Punisher by Jim Lee, a great Arvell Jones Iron Man/Avengers title splash, X-Men #186 by Barry Windsor Smith and two 70’s covers: Invaders #13 by Gil Kane/Giacoia and Avengers #123 by Ron Wilson and John Romita.
See you next week for the 25th issue of Comic Art Tips!
