Welcome to #271 of Original Comic Art Tips!
eBay: a Vampirella painting by Enric went for a $4,5 Best Offer, the Fantastic Four Storyboard by Jack Kirby for $2,8k, fans of the ‘90s will love this Shadowhawk half splash by Jim Valentino sold for $2,3k, a Usagi Yojimbo cover by Alan Quah for $1,8k, a Cerebus Jam page by Sim and friends for $1,7k, a classic “ugly girl” portrait by Basil Wolverton for $1,7k.
A Bront page by Buscema for $1,6k, the Spider-Man illustration by Mike Esposito for $1,6k, an Evil Ernie cover by Steven Hughes for a low $1,6k, a Ghost Rider page by Ron Garney for $1k, a Punisher splash by Tom Lyle for a $1k B.O.,
Charity Auctions: the bidder who won the Spawn sketch by McFarlane for $2k decided not to pay, so it was put for sale again and went for $1k… The blank cover by Todd Nauck was sold for $2,5k.
Six Mignola sketches were sold last week, the top three prices were $1,9k, $1,8k and $1,5k.
The Christmas day 1945 Dick Tracy strip was sold for $2k, it would probably go for more on a specialized auction, a beautiful 1939 Bringing Up Father Sunday for $3k.
The Kirby signed print fooled enough bidders to sell for more than $1k, a set of 50 vintage, but probably drawn by an amateur, Batman portraits were sold for $6k. A set of script and note pages by Sheldon Mayer for a 1947 Wonder Woman story were sold for a $1,5k B.O.
Heritage Weekly Auction: high prices for the two Rose pages by Charles Vess, $9k and $8k. $4k is a very high price for this Daredevil cover by Ariel Olivetti, $1,8k for a Captain America sketch by Travis Charest. Deadman pages were the affordable way to buy a Garcia Lopez piece, less than two years ago they went for $700-$1,3k. Guess what? this one was sold for $2,2k.
Saltares/Texeira Ghost Rider pages were also semi-affordable at $800-$1,5k, this one went for $2,3k.
I also have some good news: a Terry daily by Caniff was sold for $4,4k, but several strips went for very good prices: $900, $700 and look at this one sold for less than $500. A nice Superman page by Gary Frank went for less than $700, the early Blondie strips all went for lower than usual prices, this one for $400.
Catawiki: €900 for a Dan Dare page by Frank Hampson, €800 for a Torpedo illustration by Bernet, €400 for the Columbus panel by Manara, €500 for the Arrowsmith cover prelim by Pacheco, €300 for the Blueberry sketch by Giraud, €400 for the spot illustration by Jacovitti.
Comiclink: high price for a Spidey page by McFarlane, $53k, high also for a Spidey page by Miller, $43k, high prices for all of the many Ron Lim pages, with the Thanos cover sold for $36k, $34k for the Venom splash by Bagley, $33k for a Spidey page by Kane.
“low” prices for all of the Jim Lee pages, $16k for an X-Men page, $5k for a full team JLA page, $3,3k for another JLA page, $2,6k for a Wonder Woman DPS.
$15,5k paid for this Wolverine cover by Stephen Platt may be the new record, $15k may be a record for Frank Springer, probably a higher price due to the trend on Dazzler art, $14k for a Wolverine cover by Bryan Hitch.
Some interesting results at Septimus, but the website is not working. I’ll try again next week.
This week on eBay

DC: drawn in 2020 as charity sketch #14 of 60, this Grifter and Zealot cover quality piece by Jim Lee was sold for $12,1k at the time, at the moment you could buy it for 1/10 of the former price… Three Supergirl pages by Win Mortimer, Teen Titans original art by George Perez, mostly stats on this Batman title splash by Norm Breyfogle, this vintage Hawkman commission by Murphy Anderson looks great and overpriced, a cover quality Batman commission by Scott McDaniel.
Touche Turtle, Metaluna Mutant and Pufnstuf charity sketches by Mike Mignola, there’s also a nice Hellboy pinup. The seller of Golden Age art this week is on Crime stories, a second Cerebus page by Dave Sim. This seller has many cheap sketches by alternative comic artists.

Welcome to #270 of original Comic Art Tips! It seems it’s time for another Marvel alternate universe/storyline getting hot, after being considered without value for years.. first it was Spider-Man 2099, then the Clone Saga, lately it was the turn of the Age of Apocalypse and even Amalgam… the last time Ultimate Spider-Man pages by Mark Bagley were for sale they went for $200, now last week’s batch went for surprising prices (yes they featured first appearances of many Ultimate versions of villains, so regular pages will still go for much less).
A page with Kingpin was the priciest, at $3,3k, Goblin 3,2k, Goblin $2,8k, an early page for $2,8k, an origin page for $2,6k, Elektro $1,6k, Goblin $1,5k, then this one for $1,6k.

Sold for $600, this Man-Bat page by Michael Golden was sold again two days later for a $1,2k B.O.
This “production art” Kirby cover sold for $1k was clearly a simple b/w photocopy of the cover on acetate. Poor buyer.

The Calvin & Hobbes Sunday strip by Watterson was sold for $480k, more than double the $216k made last September by a daily, but I’d expect a color Sunday to be worth more in comparison…

Captain America in action by M.C. Wyman, I remember that this Doc Ock/Aunt May wedding piece by Mike Esposito was already sold on eBay at least a year ago, and it went for a high price. The Hulk page by Sal Buscema is still going.

By the way, I have two other articles in the works, if time permits I plan to publish them in the next month.
