Original Comic Art Tips #317 – October, 28 2023
Welcome! Five different Heritage auctions, this week…
eBay: the top two prices are for two items I personally would never spend so much money on… $5,5k (Best Offer) for a Fantastic Four #1 cover recreation by Dick Ayers, $4,2k (B.O.) for a Captain America commission by Steranko.
Then $2k for the Daredevil page by Bob Brown, $2,1k for a Omaha page by Waller, $1,6k for a Captain Marvel page by Marc Silvestri, a second page for $950, $1,5k for a cover by Ron Lim, $1,5k for the Joker commission by Tim Sale.
I Can’t find the B.O. price for this Dike Ruan Spidey 2099 cover, it started from $2,7k.
$1,3k for the Chun Li commission by Artgerm, $1,3 for a zombie sketch by Wrightson, sold less than a month ago for $850, $1,2k seems a good deal for this Spidey page by Trimpe, $1k (B.O.) for a color Deadman commission by Neal Adams, low $800 (B.O.) for an Avengers cover by Paul Renaud.
Heritage Weekly Auction: $8,5k for the Doonesbury daily, it could be the record price, at least for pieces sold on HA. $5k for a Batmobile toy card art by Infantino, $5k for the Death Dealer splash by Liam Sharp, $2k for the Conan page by Buscema, really high $1,6k for a 1976 Nancy Sunday strip, another high $900 for a regular 1995 Garfield daily, in preparation for the new Garfield auction. Low $650 for a Jungle Girl sketch by Cho, low $500 for a Dennis the Menace Sunday from 1978. (I don’t remember who was the ghost artist in those years).

Comiclink Auctions: So the “premium session” has ended with no premium prices. The top one was this Silver Surfer cover by Felipe Massafera, sold for almost $9k, almost $8k for a Hulk cover quality commission by Greg Hildebrandt, $7k for a Thor cover by Ron Frenz, $4k and $3k for two trading cards by Simone Bianchi, very high $3,5k for a Supergirl splash by Ian Churchill.
$2k for the early Mage page by Wagner, $2k for a Micronauts cover by J.K. Woodward.
As you can guess most of the prices were very low, like $1,2k for Werewolf poster art by Neal Adams, $1k for a Batman page by Newton, $900 for a Demon page by Byrne, $900 for an Aquaman splash by Heck, $900 for a Captain Marvel cover by Amanda Conner, $800 for a Backlash/Spider-Man page by Brett Booth, $300 for a Wolvie/Cable page by McGuinness, $300 for a Spider-Girl page by Frenz/Buscema.
Sad story: I wanted to bid on this Silver Surfer page by Rick Leonardi but I thought “it will go higher than I’d like to pay, why should I bid?”, instead it went for $650.
Marvel: an Avengers Vs. X-Men page by Marc Silvestri, Guardians by Kevin West, a GenX splash by Mark Buckingham, Iron-Man painted trading card art by Simone Bianchi.
An Elektra commission by Craig Hamilton, a Wolverine sketch cover by Dike Ruan, Fantastic Four by Immonen.

A Juliet Jones daily, a Wizard of ID Sunday.
Marvel: some Conan pages by Buscema, a Star Wars Droids page by Colon/Williamson may be your chance to buy a cheaper SW page by Al. W.C. Avengers by Milgrom.

A very early Rip Kirby, a top Hagar Sunday, a Rowland Wilson Playboy panel, a Star Wars Sunday by Manning, look at the same background hand drawn for 8 panels in this Doonesbury Sunday, The usual big lot of Garfield strips.
Holiday themed strips always go for 3/4 times the price of regular strips, so it was about time to do a holiday strips auction.
Not all are related to a festivity, like this funny early daily, then Garfield is wrapping presents, decorates a tree, waiting for Santa… There are a big pile of Sunday strips like this 12-25 one, and this 10-30 one, many full weeks and some illustrations.
A few comic art pieces in this auction, there are a Flintstones illustration a 1962 Sunday strip, a 1971 Sunday strip, a daily is going up, a big set of animation designs by Doug Wildey, a Yogi Bear Sunday.

eBay: $4k for the Ms. Marvel splash by Jim Mooney, $2,5k and $1,6k for two pages from The Silencer #1 by JRJR, at the same time a Spidey sketch by JRSR was sold for $2,5k, $2,2k for the Flash Gordon sketches by Williamson/Frazetta, $2,2k for the Black Panther cover by Paul Renaud, $2,5k for 17 Daniel Warren Johnson pages seems a good deal…
$2,1k for the Superman page by Plastino, $1,8k for a Superman cover by Ken Lashley, $1,5k for a Prince Valiant page by Murphy, $1,5k for a Groo page by Aragones, $1,2k for an Eternal Warrior illustration by Butch Guice, $1,2k (Best Offer) for an X-Factor page by Jeff Matsuda.
$1k for the 2Face commission by Tim Sale, $1k for the early Adam Hughes pinup, $900 for a Conan page by Buscema, pretty low $800 for the Kane/Wood Green Lantern page.
Heritage Weekly Auction: $6k for a Fantastic Four page and a JLA page by George Perez, $5,5k for the Not Brand Ecch page by Kirby, $3,8k for a Spawn splash by Capullo & McFarlane, $2k for a Spider-Man page by Saviuk.
An unexplainably high price: $2k for a 1990 Garfield daily.
$1,5k for an Avengers page by Opena, $1,1k for a nice Superman title page by Immonen, $1,1k for an historic For Better of For Worse daily. The new price for entry level Conan pages by Buscema/Chan is officially over $1k, it was under $500 less than three years ago.
Last week I wrote that this unsigned cartoon, sold for only $700, looked McKay-esque, many think it is actually an early McKay, and looking at it again it probably is.
Catawiki Auctions: €15k for the Alix page by Martin, €3,7k for a Spirou page by Fournier, €1,3k for the color Blueberry sketch by Giraud.
Bodnar’s Kevin Smith Auction: as you can guess the highest price was for the Daredevil page by Frank Miller, I think the price is before the 18% BP, so it is the new record for Daredevil original art by Miller, at almost $80k.
$30k for a Swamp Thing page may be a new record for Steve Bissette, no time to check prices… $27k for the Daredevil cover by Quesada, I’d give it a higher evaluation. $9k for an interior DD vs. Bullseye page. $20k record for the Mage cover by Matt Wagner, $2,8k for an interior page.
$10,5k for the highest priced Preacher page, $9k for the Green Arrow #1 cover by Wagner, again, not high. $6k for a Sandman page by Kristiansen.
Batman original art by Matt Wagner is usually rare to find, and it always goes high. This auction contained many pages, with a mix of high and affordable prices: $5,5k for a Grendel Vs. Batman splash, $3,5k for a Batman splash, $2,8k for this display ready page, $2,6k for this one.
Speaking of Batman, a Hitman page by John McCrea went for $3,2k, pages by Breyfogle for $2k and $1,6k, high $2,5k for a JLA page by Porter.
The highest price for Green Arrow art by Phil Hester was $4k for this set of two pages with Batman and the Demon, then $1k for a title splash and many very affordable pages, with $850 for a DPS, $400 for an action page and more.

Beware of the forger, this week he’s selling a “Byrne” X-Men piece, and the sketchbook he was shopping around Facebook groups two weeks ago… look at the sketches, some are well done, others are comical, like the “Wrightson” and the “Ron Lim”.

Original Comic Art Tips #312 – September, 22 2023
Welcome! A really busy week: many records at HA, a long eBay section, the great Kevin Smith collection and something for all tastes.
eBay: $19k for the 1972 Peanuts daily, it will probably be the highest price of 2023.
$2,6k for the Witchblade page by Michael Turner, $2k for a Wrightson illustration, $2k for a cover quality Hulk Vs. Spidey commission by Bagley, $2k for Superman and Batman head sketches by Kevin Nowlan (aren’t his commission prices much lower?), $2k for a Dracula title page by Colan.

Good deals on the Bronze Age Marvel pages: $700 for Ghost Rider by Perlin, $600 for Morbius by Redondo, $550 for Avengers by Milgrom, $350 for The Thing by Ron Wilson.
The fake Yellow Kid sketch was sold for $5,5k (after selling for $5,2k last week) is it the record price for forged original comic art?
Heritage Weekly Auction: $5k for the Batman cover by Maleev, same price for the James Stokoe Batman illustration and the Daredevil costume design by Wood. $3,5k for a Wolverine cover by Asrar, $2,7 for an Avengers page by Pacheco.
Heritage Signature Auction: not a world record, but an Heritage record with $312k for a Flash Gordon page by Alex Raymond (the first Flash Gordon strip was sold for $480k in 2020). Many high prices for Golden Age original art, an early and rare Batman cover sold for $270k represents a record for both Fred Ray and Jerry Robinson, $180k for a Captain Marvel cover is a new record for Jim Starlin, and Al Milgrom, and the first Starlin cosmic piece to go over $100k.
$150k record for Mort Meskin with a Golden Age DC cover, $114k for a cover by Dave Stevens, Star Wars covers always make record prices for artists who drew them, this time Rick Hoberg enters the 100k club with this cover sold for $102k. $102k also for the cover to X-Men #200 by JRJR, $102k is instead a little low for a Conan cover by Barry Smith, sold in 2019 for $90k+.
$78k is a record for Keith Pollard, with the cover to Thor #300, record price for Ryan Stegman with $28k for the cover to Carnage #1, $18k record price for Claudio Castellini and a Marvel Vs. DC cover.
You probably remember that I always found weird that the highest prices for Archie comic art, a children comic, were for “swimsuit” Betty & Veronica pinups. This time a Veronica cover by De Carlo went for $16k.
Is $12k a record for Olivier Coipel? It seems low but I don’t remember. Record for Chris Samnee at $8,5k.
There were also many low prices, as it happened in the last few months, with the hope to go down near 2019 price levels, but this newsletter is already too long…
Comiclink Auction: I can’t seem to not miss the “premium session”… but this time it wasn’t really premium, just a few nice pieces. Top price was $5,3k for a page from Strangers in Paradise #1, some more Thanos Quest pages by Ron Lim, $3,5k for this one. $2,8k for a Moon Knight page by Sienkiewicz, $2k for a Vampirella splash by Pepe Gonzales, $1,6k for a Cosmic Odyssey page by Mignola.

A Set of CGC 9.8 Watchmen sketch covers by Gibbons: Comedian, Smiley, Rorshach, Dr. Manhattan.

Top pieces by Giraud, Weinberg, Jidehem, Malik, Moebius, Batem, Hermann, Mourier, Delaby, Zep.
Then Macherot, Swolfs, Dany, Guarnido.
The personal collection of Kevin Smith, he’s auctioning some top (mostly DC) pieces and some of the best art from comics he’s written.
There are multiple pages from the same comics, so you can hope to get one for a lower price.
Many Preacher pages, never seen so many, here’s a page from #3 and one from #10, many by John McCrea, here’s Hitman and Batman, many from Matt Wagner, look at this Batman splash, early Mage, a painted Mage cover. A couple Batman pages and a DPS by Tim Sale and a couple by Breyfogle.
Some Sandman pages here’s Mark Hempel, a Starman cover by Tony Harris.

$1k for a commission of The Boys by Russ Braun, $1k for a Thunderbolts cover by Mark Bagley. The Namor page by John Byrne stayed low at $700, maybe because as I suspected it is one of those pages photocopied on DuoTone paper to add greytones? Low $750 for a Hagar Sunday by Dik Browne.
A reader made me notice that the Dale Keown cover was really a print listed as original art, it went low at $2,5k, but a dealer at the same time has the original for sale at $6k.
Usually fake sketches end below what the real original art would go for, this time the 100% fake Yellow kid sketch went for $5,2k, but don’t worry, it is for sale again.
Speaking of fake sketches, the Charlie Brown sold last week for $1,8k and quickly put for sale again is ending tonight and it seems to stay lower… Meanwhile, the forger is ready for the next auctions: yesterday he posted on a Facebook group purposely blurry pictures of Batman sketches freshly drawn (by him), probably with the intent of legitimizing them.

Scott Campbell, a little less for the Bloom County daily, $3,2k for the Batman pinup by Kelley Jones, a commission of this quality would go for less than half this price, $3k for Conan by Mark Schultz, $2,8k for a Superman sketch by Frank Quitely, $2,6k for a cover quality X-Men piece by Nick Bradshaw, $2k for a Swamp Thing illustration by Rick Veitch, $1,6k for Don Rosa, his commissions always go for two times the price he would ask you.

Somebody sold several Rob Liefeld pieces last week. $1,8k for a Wolverine/Cable pinup, $1,2k for a Snake Eyes cover, $1,3k for a Deadpool sketch cover.
$1,3k for a vintage Batman sketch by Todd McFarlane, $1,3k for a Spidey cover by Mark Bagley, $1,1k for a 1939 Terry daily by Caniff.
A reader listened to my advice and purchased the Spider-Man page by John Byrne for $1,1k. It’s a great deal for a modern page, even better considering the price for vintage Spidey pieces. I know it was bought by one of you because I received a $30 commission from eBay… thanks!
$1k for a Harley pinup by Marini, $1k for a Wonder Woman page by Delbo, $900 for the Punisher page by John Buscema.
The FAKE Peanuts piece was sadly sold for $1,7k, much less than an original one would go, but still a lot of money to waste. By the way it’s for sale again, so I hope the buyer recognized it was fake once received and sent it back. Write down the seller name and remember not to buy from him.
Heritage Weekly Auction: $4k for the Boys’ Ranch page by Kirby, $3,5k for the Sal Velluto Black Panther DPS, $3k for the Thanos cover by Geoff Shaw, $2,5k for a Spawn DPS by Jason Alexander. only $500 for a Batman page by Colan.

There were also many low or relatively low prices, like the $50k paid for a top Spidey page by McFarlane, $27k for a Batman/Superman cover by Jim Lee, low prices for Lee continue with $11k for an X-Men page and $2k for a Punisher.
I really can’t understand why this Thor cover by Kane/Romita went for only $25k, $23k for a Captain America DPS by Kirby, $18k for the title splash to Avengers #12 by Heck, Fantastic Four title splashes by Buscema and Perez went for $15k and $11k, $12k for an early Deadpool page by Liefeld.
$10k for a Peanuts daily, $4k for a Moon Knight page by Sienk, $4k for a Witchblade page.
Mandarake Auction: $15k for a Totoro sketch by Miyazaki in very bad conditions, then some very rare pieces by Leiji Matsumoto: some published Captain Harlock original pages like this one, sold for $15k, and a Galaxy Express 999 splash, sold for only $2,8k.

A Namor page by John Byrne. I don’t know if it’s pen and ink or is from one of those issues where he copied the line art on duo shade board for the grey tones, you should do your research before bidding…
DC: Lois Lane by Werner Roth, nice and cheap Aquaman page by Don Newton, a rare Wonder Woman page by George Perez, look at this 1984 Batgirl pinup by Totleben, a Superman DPS by Ed McGuinness, a Batman page prelim by Sean Murphy, a Harley sketch cover by Amanda Conner, a slabbed Rorshach sketch by Gibbons.

Two top strips: a 1972 Peanuts strip and a Hagar Sunday by Dik Browne, a B.C. daily. Pretty easy to see that this Yellow Kid drawing is fake, but it’s going up in price.
Marvel: Conan by Buscema, Hulk and a top Spidey by Sal, Planet of the Apes by Ploog, Hulk by Trimpe, a Blade Runner page by Williamson, Fantastic Four by Byrne, a vintage Spidey page by Bagley, What The? by Liefeld, a Spidey splash by Saviuk, a Prowler splash by Reinhold.

Strips:
Not the greatest selection ever, but there are a few great pieces, like this Flash Gordon page by Raymond and there are also some top Rip Kirbys, Rarebit Fiend by McKay (no Little Nemos after the bad recent results), not many Peanuts strips, Burma in this Terry daily, a Valiant panel by Foster, a 1921 Gasoline Alley, the best Sky Masters offered in the last 10 years, a Star Wars Sunday by Manning and the usual big batch of Garfield strips.
I arrived in time for the next CL auction… But there’s so much great comic art that I should have started last week and done a two part review. You should really go and browse the entire auction yourself.
The earlier top piece is this 1941 Captain Marvel page by C.C. Beck, then a pre-hero Marvel page by Ditko, a Namor title splash by Colan, a Namor page by Everett. The top Don Heck piece is this Avengers title splash, but I couldn’t leave off this Iron-Man page. Same with Kirby, many top pieces with a Captain America DPS, but my favorite is this Namor page.
